According to studies, around 70% of dirtying is caused by bad urban environment.

Exhaust fumes, dirty water coming from barrier walls and sill rails, dust, oil, condensate – all of these dirtyings are pretty common for urban environment. All of it can not be cleaned by just water because everything that we mentioned before contains oil with its hydrophobic properties.

  • Rainbow dirtying appears because of leaching of soluble components of plaster and concrete. This process forms the thin rainbow film on the panels.
  • Lime bloom appears in a concrete solidification process when calcium hydroxide turns into calcium carbonate and settles on the surface of the panels.

Most of the dirtyings, caused by urban environment, appear through the contact with rainwater. Dust and suspended solids of different materials entering the air settle on the surface of the panels. Then, all of it mixes with rainwater and drains down. That’s how sustainable dirtying is formed.

The main component of NICHIGUEARD COVER is particles of silicon oxide (SiO2) which contains mica and aluminosilicate with great electric- and heat-insulation properties. These particles have high hydrophilic properties and they capture water molecules from the air.

Thickness of water film ranges from 100 to 300 nanometers. Thickness of silicon particles is around 10-30 nanometers.


Engagement angle defines the hydrophilicity (the ability to absorb water) and hydrophobicity (the ability to repel water) for each of solid bodies during the interaction process of solid bodies’ surfaces and liquids. Engagement angle is quantitative feature of wetting process. The trick is simple: water doesn’t go directly into the fibrocement panel and absorption doesn’t happen. The process that is happening, according to physicists, is called wetting – the forming of nanofilm out of water molecules.


NICHIGUARD cover layer is evenly distributed silicon particles containing hydroxyl groups (OH) where oxygen and hydrogen are bound by a covalent bond. Hydroxyl is the one who captures the water molecules (H2O) from the air and forms a thin molecular water film on the surface of the processed fibrocement plate. This nanofilm prevents the emergence of static electricity and makes it difficult for dust and dirt to stick to the panels’ surface. Surprisingly, this film allows you to clean the surface even if the dust and dirt are stuck on it.

On such film water stays for longer than dust and dirt. That’s why particulate matter absorbs in the water film, not allowing hydrophobic kinds of dirtying (smoke, smog and exhaust fumes) settle on the surface.

During precipitations, the film is being washed away taking all the dirt with it. This process is called self-cleaning.

The surface covered with NICHIGUARD photographed by electronic microscope with increases in 50 000 times. You can see that silicon particles are evenly distributed along the surface.

Stratus structure of mica provides cleat, elasticity and resistibility. It maintains clear and unified configurations of molecules even on extremely thin layers.


Protective properties of NICHIGUEARD are not limited only to mechanical impacts.

Water film physical properties and special antibacterial supplement significantly reduce the growth of microorganisms. Till now this effect was tested only in Japanese laboratories and the result is not assured.*

*The testing was held in laboratory of Nichiha company in Japan on the limited number of samples. Some kinds of mold, moss and algae might differ from the tested ones and have high resistance.

Nanohydrophil cover NICHIGUARD protects panels from exhaust fumes, smoke, dust and soil sticking. In extremely polluted areas NICHIGUATD could not be as effective as it is in less polluted zones. Rust and dirt with a high density and viscosity could also reduce the effectiveness of the NICHIGUARD cover.
